Principles of change management

This accredited short course introduces the core principles of change management and how to apply them effectively in the workplace. Participants will learn how to manage transitions, support teams through change, and contribute to successful organisational transformation.

The Principles of Change Management (SAQA Unit Standard 115407) is a short course at NQF Level 5, designed to equip individuals with the essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage and support change initiatives within the workplace. This 2-credit course is suitable for all staff, particularly those involved in management, leadership, human resources, or project implementation roles. To enroll, learners should have a matric-level education (or equivalent), be proficient in English, and possess basic computer literacy. While the course is short in duration, it offers highly practical and impactful learning for adapting to and facilitating organizational change.

The course focuses on helping participants understand the fundamental principles and dynamics of change, including the different types of change (planned and unplanned), the typical responses of individuals to change, and the psychological and emotional impact of organizational transformation. Learners are introduced to widely accepted change management models, such as Lewin’s Change Management Model, Kotter’s 8-Step Process, and the ADKAR Model, among others. These frameworks help learners grasp the stages of change and understand how to support employees through the transition process.

Participants learn to identify key drivers of change—such as technology advancements, market competition, regulatory shifts, and internal restructuring—and how these forces impact organizational systems and employee behavior. The course emphasizes the importance of communicating change effectively, addressing resistance, and fostering employee engagement throughout the change process. Learners are taught to develop change management strategies, communicate change objectives clearly, and align change initiatives with organizational goals.

Another core aspect of the course is understanding the role of leadership in change. Participants explore how managers and team leaders can act as change agents by demonstrating commitment, empathy, and transparency. They also learn how to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of change interventions, ensuring that performance improvements are sustained over time and that the organization remains adaptable to future changes.

In practical terms, learners are encouraged to apply their understanding to real or simulated workplace scenarios. This helps them practice the skills of planning, implementing, and reviewing change initiatives, and understanding how to measure change outcomes against key performance indicators. The course also touches on ethical considerations, ensuring that participants handle organizational change in a way that respects employees and promotes a positive workplace culture.

In summary, the Principles of Change Management short course offers a concise yet powerful foundation for anyone responsible for or affected by change in the workplace. It builds awareness of the change process, teaches practical tools for managing transitions effectively, and fosters a proactive, resilient approach to change. This makes it an ideal course for organisations aiming to build a workforce that is agile, adaptable, and equipped to thrive in today’s fast-evolving business environment.
